Simple side road zebras are easy to install and give pedestrians clearer priority at side streets; supporting people to walk and wheel more.
They also reinforce the Highway Code, which instructs vehicle drivers and riders to give way to pedestrians when turning in and out of sideroads.
Side road zebras have been successfully trialled in Cardiff, London, Manchester and Warwick – and on 11 March the Senedd gave local authorities new powers to roll out side road zebras across Welsh communities.
However, side road zebras are not a cure-all. They need to be in the right places and should be part of a wider solution to make neighbourhoods more walkable.
